I'm currently the Founder and CEO of Social Alpha, providing social analytics solutions to retail and institutional investors. Prior to that, I had the pleasure of being a Research Scientist in the Machine Learning Group at the IBM Watson Research Center.

The text analytics system we built for UNICEF Uganda won the INFORMS Innovative Applications in Analytics Award 2014 and was covered by the Wall Street Journal. Our work on Amplifying the Voice of Youth in Africa won the Best Application Paper Award at KDD 2013. Previously, our work on Constrained Markov Decision Processess won the Best Application Paper Award at KDD 2010, and was covered by CNN. Our team won the KDD Cup 2009, KDD Cup 2008 and the INFORMS Data Mining Contest 2008.

I'm currently co-chairing the Industry Track of the 20th ACM Conference on Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining (KDD 2014). I also serve on the Editorial Board of Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery. I previously served on the Organizing Committees of CIKM 2012, ICML 2011, Mining and Learning with Graphs (MLG 2011), KDD 2010 and WSDM 2010. I co-organized the first workshop on Social Media Analytics (SOMA 2010) at KDD, and the first workshop on Budgeted Learning at ICML 2010.

I got my Ph.D. from the Department of Computer Sciences at the University of Texas at Austin. At UT, I was a member of the Machine Learning group, led by Raymond Mooney. Prior to that I got bachelor's degrees in Computer Science and in Math from Brandeis University - where I worked at the DEMO Lab, Interaction Lab, and the Vision Lab, and was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa honor society.

My research interests lie in Machine Learning and Data Mining; more specifically, I am interested in social media analytics, sentiment analysis, emerging topic detection, assessing influence in networks, active learning, ensemble methods, active feature-value acquisition, dual supervision, recommender systems, class probability estimation, semi-supervised learning, text classification, and applications of data mining to analyzing social media, business analytics and e-commerce.
